  • Trump warns nations from trading with Iran amid U.S. sanctions

The sanctions are part of a steadily increasing pressure campaign implemented after Trump in May chose to withdraw the United States from the Obama-era Iran nuclear accord that sought to limit Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has vowed that Iran will stand firm against threats by the United States over oil shipments, after Washington reimposed economic sanctions on the Islamic republic. Donald Trump claimed they were "the most biting ever imposed" and warned that in November, sanctions would "ratchet up to yet another level" with an embargo on Iranian oil and blanket sanctions on Iranian banks.

Zarif said the USA president has taken a hostile approach towards the Iranian nation as he first re-imposed those sanctions that targeted activities such as plane purchases.

In comments carried by the Office of the President, Rouhani was said to have praised the two countries' "friendly and heartfelt relationship" and mutual support for each other, while warning that Washington should not be seen as trustworthy.

"If the Americans want to keep this simplistic and impossible idea in their minds they should also know its consequences".

Gholamali Khoshroo argues in a commentary published by the Guardian on Wednesday that by abrogating a multilateral 2015 nuclear deal and imposing new sanctions on foreign companies doing business with Iran, the Trump administration is also reneging on UNSC resolution 2231.

Zarif said in his Wednesday remarks that the world was taking Iran's side in the face of United States acts.

European countries, hoping to persuade Tehran to continue to respect the nuclear deal, have promised to try to lessen the blow of sanctions and to urge their firms not to pull out.

Countries like Russia, China and Turkey, however, have said that they would not abide by the USA sanctions, and would continue to trade with Iran.

"The US withdrawal from JCPOA and re-imposition of its sanctions is a serious breach of its legal obligations under the United Nations Charter, which entails its global responsibility".

The US now plans on adding Iranian oil and gas to the sanctions in November this year.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, however, warned that the unilateral United States sanctions could further destabilise the Middle East and boost "radical forces" in the region.

The renewed US sanctions go into effect as protests escalate against Iran's hardline ruling party over its enormous military spending, which has crippled an already weak Iranian economy.

Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif turned the tables on Washington's efforts to isolate the regime, saying Monday that it is in fact the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia who are isolated in their hostility towards Iran.

"They fear the application of overwhelming American power, and as long as the overwhelming power is credible, they will be cautious in how they'll escalate", he said.
