  • Chicago People walk by McDonald's restaurant in Chicago. McDonald's is the 2nd most successful restaurant franchise in the world with 33,000 locations

The FDA provided the updated 395 case count on August 2, which follows a July 20 statement from McDonald's that announced the fast-food conglomerate had removed affected products from shelves at impacted locations, and replaced it with a lettuce blend from a different supplier.

The cyclospora parasite affects the intestinal health of those who consume tainted water or food. In response, McDonald's has stopped selling salads in 3,000 US restaurants until they can replace their lettuce supplier.

Sixteen people have been hospitalized, but there have been no fatalities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Symptoms may also include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps and pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, body aches, headache and fever.

The FDA said an unused package of a Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed to McDonald's tested positive for the presence of Cyclospora though it was past its July 19 expiration date.

I don't think I should be put in a position like that, when you're expected to come out and perform the next day. It was the latest finish in the 50-year history of the tournament, which this year has been blighted by rain.

The illness can last a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. In a statement, Fresh Express says it issued a "precautionary recall" on July 27. The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service also issued a health alert about salads and wraps sold at Trader Joe's, Walgreen's and more chains due to possible cyclospora contamination.

The FDA said the investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, and that the agency "is now reviewing distribution and supplier information for romaine and carrots".

The FDA said the parasite is likely linked with salads from McDonald's restaurants.
