Heatwave temperatures may top 45C in southern Europe

Parts of the Iberian Peninsula are nearing the mid-40s and there is a chance Saturday could come close to the all-time record for Europe, according to forecasters.

Temperatures are rising in Spain and Portugal aided by a wave of hot air coming from Africa.

Portuguese authorities issued a nationwide health warning, including for dust from the Sahara Desert.

Boiling heat will blow across Europe this week as the UK's hottest summer continues. In Brazil, the highest temperature ever registered by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) was 44.7 ° C, in the city of Bom Jesus (PI), on November 21, 2005.

Southwest Europe is bracing itself for extreme heat and forecasters are advising holidaymakers to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day.

June's average United Kingdom maximum temperature was 19.9C, the same as June 1976.
