- The Trump administration is proposing to roll back Obama-era mileage standards that were created to make cars more fuel efficient and reduce pollution and California Democrats are vowing to fight back.

But the EPA's standards refer to testing under laboratory conditions, not the mileage we get when driving our cars on the road.

The proposal freezes fuel efficiency requirements for America's cars and trucks until 2026 - repealing one of Washington's most significant steps in recent years to curb greenhouse gas.

Becerra said he was already preparing to sue the Trump administration and would be joined by 18 other state attorneys general, including Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and NY.

California is confident the administration has no legal authority to revoke the waiver it has been granted under the Clean Air Act allowing it to keep the Obama-era rules in place. All have Democratic attorneys general.

Schwarzenegger and Trump have repeatedly criticized each other over the years, including during Trump's presidency.

Environmental groups in ME, which is among the states that adopted California's tougher emissions requirements for new cars, and around the country quickly denounced the widely anticipated move. President Trump should be commended for standing up for American consumers by reducing the regulatory burden placed unnecessarily on automakers.

The Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency have released a proposal that would effectively lock in model-year-2020 mpg standards through 2026.

While the new standard is significantly lower than Obama's 2025 target of 54 miles per gallon, the difference is expected to have a minimal impact on climate. The fuel-efficiency rules, which were key to former President Barack Obama's efforts to fight climate change, require auto makers to cut emissions enough. "It's a boon for big oil that ordinary Americans will pay for with their health and their wallets". "At first glance, this proposal completely misrepresents costs and savings". Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger pointed out that it was Ronald Reagan who sought out California's right to regulate emissions.

Automakers, represented by the Auto Alliance and Global Automakers, said they support "substantive negotiations" about fuel efficiency standards.

The administration also contends that hiking USA oil consumption by 2 to 3 percent over forecast levels would have a minimal impact on the environment, boosting global average temperature by just "3/1000th of a degree Celsius by 2100".
