  • When and where to watch the Blood Moon in Sweden

The longest total lunar eclipse of the century arrives Friday night, showcasing a blood moon for most of the Eastern Hemisphere.

This will be the second and last lunar eclipse of 2018.

According to some Hindu beliefs, celestial bodies such as the sun and moon emit negative energy during an eclipse and so some temples in India were closed to minimize any disturbance.

The period of complete eclipse - known as "totality", when the moon appears darkest - will last from 1930 to 2113 GMT.

The Weather Channel will be live streaming the lunar eclipse on its smartphone app beginning at 4 p.m.

Residents in certain parts of the world will witness a rare sight on Friday, as a lunar eclipse and the closest approach of the planet Mars in 15 years will both occur at the same time.

The totality of this lunar eclipse will last about an hour and 43 minutes, but a partial eclipse before and after the total phase means the moon will spend almost four hours crossing the Earth's shadow.

According to him, unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions as they appear dimmer than the full moon.

He said that the occurrence necessitated the need for scientists to continue monitoring and exploring the dynamics of the motion and the phenomena associated with them.

This lunar eclipse will feature the longest blood moon that the Earth has witnessed in 100 years. While many in the world consider this just a scientific or astronomical celestial activity, however, in India, lunar eclipse has a significant importance in terms of believes and practices. Combined with the red tinge of the Moon, the two will make for an incredibly rare spectacle in the night sky.

In the United Kingdom the partial eclipse will begin at 8.30pm, the total eclipse will occur between 9.20pm with the moon visible to the south-east, until 10.13pm.

North America will nearly completely miss out on the blood moon.

The next time a similarly extended eclipse will happen again is in 2025. From 1.15 am to 2.43 am, the moon will be in the middle of the Earth's shadow and will appear reddish in colour.

It depends partly on "how cloudy or transparent those parts of the Earth's atmosphere are which enable sunlight to reach the moon", he told AFP.

If you're in North America and want to watch the lunar eclipse, you still can.

While Mars may not be immediately visible without the right equipment, nonetheless, it would be an exciting opportunity to view the bright red planet right next to the red (eclipsed) Moon on that night.
