  • Longest lunar eclipse to take place on Friday

The world is about to witness a total Lunar Eclipse tonight, that is on the night of July 27 and July 28 that will last about 1 hour 45 minutes.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on its ghostly red pallor because of the Earth's shadow.

By the time the blood moon is rising on Friday evening in the United Kingdom, it will have begun to pass out of Earth's shadow - although it will still remain quite red. The Moon will take three hours and 55 minutes to cross the Earth's dark shadow during its sojourn.

The Moon will begin a long journey through Earth's shadow on Friday afternoon, with the complete trip taking just over 6 hours.

Mr Kirkley said that the sunrise would begin during the eclipse which would "wash out" the colours of the moon as it turned red. The total eclipse will last 1 hour 42 minutes and 57 seconds.

Mars will next be this close to earth in 2035. Not only will we be able to observe the eclipse for the longest time in our probable lifetimes, at the end of it, we can just turn our telescopes around and watch Mars make its closest approach to us!

"On the 27th July, Mars will be at its closest to the Earth, with the moment of opposition itself being in the early morning, although here in the United Kingdom we'll have to wait until nighttime".

The eclipse is visible from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, most of Asia and South America and in the United Kingdom from around 21:00 to 22:15 BST.

The International Astronomical Center will organise an event on the Abu Dhabi Corniche, opposite Adnoc, at 8pm, which will include a talk on eclipses and visible planets that can be seen at this time of year. The "little planet" image on the left also shows the approximate size of Earth compared to the moon.

Mars will more likely appear as a very bright star. This light appears reddish.

Pramod G. Galgali, Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, said, "Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be witnessed without any special equipment".

Dr Gregory Brown, of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: "We miss a section of the eclipse due to the moon being below our horizon when it starts".

"If Earth partially blocks the sun, and the darkest part of its shadow falls across the moon's surface, it is called a partial eclipse".

Part of the Moon's shadow fell near the South Pole, so partial coverage of the Sun was visible in parts of southern Australia.

The next total lunar eclipse will happen on January 21st, 2019. "The objective of the prayer is simple, to worship God", said Hasan Al Hariri, the chief executive of Dubai Astronomy Group.

Although it won't look almost as large as the blood moon, Mars will be its largest if you're looking through a telescope and close to its maximum brightness in our sky.
