Former Trump campaign aide Carter Page denies being a Russian intelligence agent

On Sunday, Page denied he has ever been an agent for the Russian government.

"For more than a year, House Republicans have bullied the Department of Justice and FBI to release highly sensitive documents to derail the Special Counsel's and other legitimate national security investigations and cover for the President", House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. "The Rigged Witch Hunt, headed by the 13 Angry Democrats (and now 4 more have been added, one who worked directly for Obama W.H.), seems intent on damaging the Republican Party's chances in the November Election" President Trump tweeted.

Carter Page speaks with reporters in November 2017 following a day of questions from the House Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington.

They also say the warrant is tainted - based on the opposition research dossier on Trump and Russian Federation that was paid for by Democrats - and that because the FISA warrant helped launch the FBI investigation into Trump and Russian Federation, the whole investigation is tainted. The document adds that "The FBI speculates that the identified United States person was likely looking for information that could be used to discredit [Trump's] campaign".

There is redacted line followed by "undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election in violation of USA criminal law".

"The F.B.I. believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government", the application said, which after redactions continued with, "undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election in violation of USA criminal law".

Democrats also argue the FBI's interest in Page predated its knowledge of the opposition research dossier and say it was not the dossier and the Page FISA warrant that prompted the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into Russia, but rather an earlier conversation that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos had with an Australian diplomat about alleged Russian dirt on Clinton.

President Donald Trump's claim is that the Russian investigation was launched by "sore losers" in the political establishment. But they included damning passages concerning Page, who served for a time as a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.

Last week, a federal grand jury charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic computer networks in 2016, in the most detailed USA accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the presidential election to help Mr Trump.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, the author of a bill that would impose severe sanctions on Russia if it was determined to have interfered in a U.S. election, said Trump should approach meetings with Putin without illusions about the Russian leader's endgame. But they also said the bureau believed the information cited in the application "to be credible" because that person provided reliable information in the past.

Page said the claim that Divyekin offered compromising material on Hillary Clinton was "preposterous". "I think that's different from spying on a campaign".

"A few people might have brought it up in passing, but again, it's a major economic issue".

The request to wiretap Page noted that the resulting information could produce evidence of crimes.
