Sanders said the White House was considering Russia's idea of allowing its officials to interview 11 Americans - including former USA ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul - in exchange for special counsel Robert Mueller to interview 12 Russians indicted for meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin shake hands during a joint news conference after their meeting in Helsinki, Finland, July 16, 2018.

White House aides are anxious that Trump will interpret the comments by Coats as a personal betrayal since they came so soon after the president praised him.

"It is the sense of Congress that the United States should refuse to make available any current or former diplomat, civil servant, political appointee, law enforcement official, or member of the armed forces of the United States for questioning by the government of Vladimir Putin", the resolution says, Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Media figures and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have lobbed criticism toward the USA president for holding a joint press conference with Putin in Helsinki, during which Trump expressed doubt over the claims of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election. Critics complained that Trump was given ample opportunity at a joint news conference on Monday to scold Putin over Russian interference in the US election but instead accepted Putin's denials over the word of American intelligence agencies. John Brennan, director of the Central Intelligence Agency under Barack Obama, even said Trump's words constituted "treason". "It's a risk", Coats said of the poisonings, which Russian Federation has denied.

US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who issued the indictments against the 12 Russians last week, said on Thursday that the US would seek to warn the public in the future when it believes foreign states are trying to influence elections. "In the United States, in Russian Federation, or anywhere else", he said in a statement.

Hours later, the White House stepped in to say Trump's answer wasn't what it appeared.

Coats, who is charged with overseeing the nation's 17 intelligence agencies, also said that if he had been asked, he would have advised Trump against meeting Putin alone, with just interpreters.

"Trump's behaviour was a total disaster for long-term prospects of the normalization of the U.S. -Russia relationship", said Alexander Gabuev of the Carnegie Moscow Center.

According to many experts, Anthony is most likely to end up playing for the Houston Rockets next season. The charges against Schroder were recommended to be upgraded from misdemeanor to felony .

In his comments, Mr Putin said the meeting had been "successful and has led to useful agreements".

Russia's official assessment of Trump's high-stakes summit with Putin is carefully upbeat.

He later said he had misspoken at the summit.

Russian Federation was also seeking to interview Michael McFaul, another Putin critic who was USA ambassador to Moscow under President Obama.

Trump's comments in support of arch-rival Russian Federation were condemned by both Democrats and Republicans.

Putin doesn't blame Trump for that.

"It later then came out in the Russian press that they had a list, and I was at the top of that list", McFaul said on MSNBC Thursday morning.

The phrase "real enemy of the people" was used as an "operative threat to murder the opposition during the French Revolution", Cuomo said. Russian officials worry that domestic turmoil in the US will hamper potential future cooperation on Syria or arms control discussed at the summit. Minutes after Sanders announced Trump's disapproval of Russia's request, the Senate adopted a non-binding resolution that would bar U.S. officials from being questioned by the Kremlin in a 98-0 vote.
