  • Amazon Prime sale day 2018 launched 12pm Monday 16 July 2018

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) said online shoppers purchased more than 100 million products worldwide during its Prime Day sale, despite glitches on its mobile app and websites that prevented customers from placing orders.

Among the best-selling products were several of Amazon's own, including the Fire TV stick and the Echo Dot.

Shoppers purchaed more than five million toys, beauty products, PCs, apparel items and kitchen products.

The most popular purchases in the United States were Instant Pots, personal water filters and the 23andMe DNA test. Laundry detergent, smartphones, pans, light bulbs, and video games and consoles were big sellers internationally.

Last year's Prime Day had begun later in the day, however, with deals starting at 9 p.m. on July 10 and running through July 11.

AUSTRALIA'S first ever Amazon Prime Day kicked off at midday yesterday - but despite the hype, shoppers have slammed the sale's mediocre discounts and limited offerings.

Despite the glitch Amazon experienced on Monday, the volume of people talking about the sales rose about 6% on social sites.

There's up to 50 per cent off Amazon Prime products

Amazon's annual 36-hour shopathon, an important marketing tool as well as a boost to business, had been expected to drum up $3.4 billion of spending - up more than 40 percent from previous year - as bargain-hunters chase promotions and discounts.

"Since last Prime Day, the number of brands Amazon operates more than doubled", Smith said, adding that the company now has over 80 private labels across a number of categories but heavily invested in fashion.

"Prime Day 2018 has exceeded our expectations - sales are up more than 400 percent over a typical day".

Amazon created Prime Day as a way to boost sales during the summer doldrums and to add yet another benefit to paying for an Amazon Prime membership.

Amazon said Prime Day was its best sales day for both Amazon and smart-home devices.

"Some customers are having difficulty shopping, and we're working quickly to resolve this issue", Amazon said in a statement Monday afternoon, noting that despite the glitches, many users were still able to shop successfully.

As of Tuesday evening, Amazon said sales by small- and medium sized businesses had topped $1 billion during the Prime Day event. Although other retailers have started doing deals in an attempt to keep up, it isn't a recognised multi-outlet sale, but rather a giant free advert for a company which could easily afford to pay us, so we're avoiding it.
