And knocking down a few outdated superhero paradigms in the process.

A wealthy socialite who calls Gotham home, Batwoman's Kate Kane is described as "armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind", while physically she is a "highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence". However, like many bats that have come before her, Kate is haunted by the demons of her past, and must confront them before she can be the symbol of hope that Gotham so desperately needs. Kate is also one of the first LGBT members of the Bat Family. Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, would be the first gay lead character of a live-action superhero show.

The CW has put in development a Batwoman series for 2019 consideration.

The first out gay superhero in the DC Comics lore after being reintroduced as a Jewish lesbian in 2006, Batwoman will now be the first gay lead character in a live-action superhero show. Also in-line to help executive produce the planned superhero drama are Berlanti and his Warner Bros. It seems that the network is happy with how that all went down-and presumably with whomever was cast in the role-because now they're bringing a full-fledged Batwoman series to the screen.

Astronomers accidentally discovered 12 more moons of Jupiter, including an 'oddball'
Elucidating the complex influences that shaped a moon's orbital history can teach scientists about our Solar System's early years. Even though a dozen new moons is a pretty good haul, Sheppard expects that more searching will turn up even more moons.

But other comic universes, like Marvel, have trailed when it comes to issues of queer representation. Supergirl, which airs on the CW, revealed in 2016 that the titular character's sister Alex Danvers is a lesbian, and appears to be casting a transgender character in its new season.

A Batwoman series is in the works from The Vampire Diaries' Caroline Dries and superproducer Greg Berlanti, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The city of Gotham is also set to be added to the Arrow-verse.

DC Comics debuted Batwoman in the pages of Detective Comics #233 in 1956. On film, Batwoman appeared in Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, voiced by Kyra Sedgwick, a 2002 direct-to-video animated film based on animated series The New Batman Adventures. It was previously announced that the character will be introduced in December during the Arrowverse's annual crossover.
