The Philippines on Friday joined the worldwide community in rejoicing with Thailand after the daring rescue of 12 members of a boys soccer team and their coach in a flooded cave complex in the northern part of the country.

The boys and their coach have been in hospital since then.

The unprecedented rescue involved scores of Thai and foreign expert cave divers, many of whom have expressed delight and surprise at the success of the mission.

The boys, who on average had shed 2 kilograms (4 pounds), had regained some of the weight and their appetites, health minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said on Saturday. Duangpetch said that Ekkapon told the boys not to move and to stay still so that they would save their energy.

All 13 are expected to be released from a hospital in Thailand's Chiang Rai province on Thursday, officials told reporters at a press conference where the video was shown.

"I knew that we had a good team, with good support from the Thai authorities, the caving community and rescue organisations, so we had the best we could do to make a plan work".

Natthawut Thakhamsai (Tle), 14, said he was now in good health and would like to eat rice with basil and crisp fried pork.

His statement contradicted an earlier report that the group planned a small birthday party for one of the boys, so they brought food and snacks.

The man who led the expedition to free a young football team trapped in a cave in Thailand has downplayed the significance of the rescue mission that transfixed people around the world for 17 days.
