Saturday at the All England Club, however, her voice quivered with emotion after her pursuit of a 24th Grand Slam title and eighth Wimbledon championship was denied, 6-3, 6-3, by the hard-hitting precision of Germany's Angelique Kerber.

It is Kerber's third grand slam title after her victories at the Australian and US Opens in 2016.

The 2016 Australian Open champion got off to a brilliant start, immediately breaking her well-decorated USA opponent to take a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the match. For Serena, surpassing Margaret Court (24 grand slam titles) and making more history at Wimbledon will have to wait, despite that she still had an wonderful run given her return from pregnancy just a few weeks previously. After all, it was only 10 months ago that she needed an emergency C-section while giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, and she also suffered blood clots and other serious complications afterwards.

So much for Serena Williams's fairy tale ending at Wimbledon.

After the match, during an interview, Serena got a bit emotional sharing that: 'It was such an awesome tournament for me. I am literally just getting started, so I look forward to it'.

Serena Williams' husband posted a heartfelt message on social media following the tennis star's loss to Angelique Kerber in the final at Wimbledon.

So, despite her straight-sets defeat in the final to Kerber, who's winning a Grand Slam after 22 months, Serena has done incredibly well. "Now she's supporting me in a different role, but our friendship is still exactly the same", she said.

Two years after losing to Williams with a title on the line at Centre Court, Kerber came through.

After the match, the 36-year-old said: "For all the moms out there, I was playing for you today, I tried". Though the German wasn't the aggressor, she still out-attacked the greatest attacker in tennis. She's an incredible person, a really good friend, so I am really happy for her.

Kerber was in the ascendancy early and broke at the first time of asking when Williams found the net after a lengthy rally.

"Every time I go out there, I want to, I guess, take a giant step forward", she said.

That group included Tiger Woods, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and - in the front row of the Royal Box - the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. She will now be ranked back in the top 30. Anderson also played another long one in the quarterfinals Wednesday, erasing a match point and coming back after dropping the opening two sets to stun eight-time Wimbledon champion Federer 13-11 in the fifth.
