Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis both quit the government this week in protest.

Both Trump and May dismissed the idea that the United Kingdom government's plan makes a trade deal impossible.

The verbal attack on Mr Khan came after he refused to block a plan to fly a giant inflatable "Trump baby" near Parliament to coincide with mass protests surrounding the president's visit.

Trump's Brexit comments came on the same day May's government published long-awaited proposals for Britain's relations with the European Union after it leaves the bloc next year.

"The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on", he said.

He apologised to the PM for the story and said the newspaper left out the good things he had said about her, adding "it's called fake news".

Trump also set a hard line on the country's ongoing "Brexit" negotiations, telling the tabloid that he advised Prime Minister Theresa May against the "soft" blueprint she recently presented to alleviate economic fallout as the country separates from the European Union. "I think you are losing your culture".

Speaking with The Sun newspaper after arriving in the country yesterday, Trump described Johnson as "a very talented guy" for whom he had "a lot of respect". I'm sorry, I was wrong to say the things that I said would be an apology.

"I was very saddened to see he was leaving government and I hope he goes back in at some point".

He added: "I didn't think they put it in, but that's all right".

Sheila Menon, one of the organizers of the balloon, told CNBC's Steve Sedgwick that this protest has become so popular because "so many people have a very strong opinion about President Trump". I look at cities in Europe, and I can be specific if you'd like. I haven't been there in a long time.

It just shows what a bad president he is."Khan, who has no powers over immigration, also questioned the motives behind Trump's repeated criticism."Manchester also suffered a terror attack ..." Reports have indicated that his visit will be met with protests, prompting a warning from the U.S. Embassy in London, which advised Americans in the country to "keep a low profile" in case the demonstrations turn violent. "But it is too bad what is going on".

"I cherish the special relationship with the United States and the many Americans who contribute to our city", posted Khan, London's first Muslim mayor. Trump said: "The relationship between our two nations is indispensable to the cause of liberty, justice, and peace".

The president also hit out at immigration into Europe, linking it with crime.

"With the flexibility that is built into the white paper proposals, there is absolutely no reason why a trade deal between us and the U.S. can not happen and I think both sides do want it to happen".

He insisted: "I said I thought it was going to happen and it did happen".
