In a nail clipping ceremony yesterday, Mr Chillal finally cut his nails. Chillal's nails had grown to about 31-feet, which would rival a three-story building when laid out flat.

He had made it to the the Guinness Book of World Records in 2016 for having the "Longest Fingernails on a Single Hand Ever". The 14-year-old then chose to take up a challenge to see how long he could go without trimming his nails.

Speaking through a museum interpreter he said: "I don't know if the teacher is dead now or not, but I would definitely like to say the thing that you scolded me for, I took it as a challenge".

He only grew the nails on his left hand, keeping his right hand trimmed.

Chillal's decision to finally let go of his 66-year-old nails could have been influenced by the level of care required to maintain them. The man could not open his hand or flex his fingers.

The 82-year-old from Pune, India, was flown to NY last week to get his talons - considered the longest in the world - cut, courtesy of Ripley's Believe It or Not, which will display the clippings in an exhibit at its Times Square location.

A school yard incident prompted the challenge for Shridhar Chillal to grow his nails on his left hand when he was a teenager.

The nails prevented him from sleeping properly - he had to wake up regularly to check they weren't being crushed. His longest nail was on his thumb. He found it hard to sleep, and even a gust of wind was cause for alarm.
