The swells generated by Chris could also cause could cause "life-threatening surf" conditions, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Hunters flew into the storm, which took on an eye feature early in the afternoon hours, suggesting Chris had strengthened even before official pressure and wind measurements were sampled.

The National Hurricane Centre confirmed this change in a tweet which said: "Chris is the second hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, after hurricane Beryl".

Chris is expected to be a post-tropical storm by the time it arrives Thursday, slowly weakening as it moves toward the Avalon Peninsula. The hurricane center gives the storm a 50 percent chance of regenerating into a tropical depression or storm within the next five days.
