  • Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

Twitter has been trying to clean house over the past several months - and this week President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama saw a dramatic drop in followers.

The new policy could be substantial for some Twitter users because follower totals serve as a top selling point when celebrities and so-called social media influencers negotiate deals with advertisers.

They are the two most popular Twitter accounts, with 110 million and 107 million followers respectively before the purge.

Jack Dorsey, Twitter chief executive officer, also lost 200,000 followers.

Trump's account on Wednesday showed him with 53.4 million followers.

Union minister Smriti Irani, who has, of late, been lying low on Twitter, lost close to 40,000 followers (8.19 million) while minister without portfolio Arun Jaitley was down by over 50,000 followers (13 million). While it excludes spam accounts in reported user data, Twitter noted early this year that monthly active user numbers would be "negatively impacted" by efforts to expunge fake accounts.

On Wednesday, Twitter had announced in a statement that it would be deleting the accounts that had been locked, leading to a fall in follower counts this week.

Katy Perry has maintained her place as the most followed person on Twitter.

Former US President Obama lost 2.5 million followers; Trump saw his follower count drop by roughly 400,000 and Kim Kardashian unloaded 1.7 million followers in the last day.

Other high-profile figures also took a hit to their numbers of followers. Obama, for example, gained almost 2,000 followers in the overnight hours, which roughly fits the range of followers he gained in previous weeks during the same Thursday-to-Friday overnight interval.

"People having an artificially-inflated follower count made up of bots and redundant accounts is at best deceiving and at worst, fraud".

Other accounts were locked for tweeting large amounts of unwarranted replies or mentions, misleading links, or "if a large number of accounts block the account after mentioning them". Officials said this will help make Twitter a "more trusted service for public conversation".
