The run up to the elections 2018 is getting bloodier day by day, as only a few days after the martyrdom of 22 people, including ANP's electoral candidate Haroon Bilour, in Peshawar, two deadly bombings rattled rallies in Mastung and Bannu on Friday, killing at least 134 people and injuring scores of others.

Caretaker Home Minister Agha Umar Bungalzai told The Associated Press another 120 people were injured in the bombing.

A senior provincial government official also confirmed the figure, adding that 150 others were injured in the attack.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack through its newswire Aamaq.

Pakistan's caretaker government launched a crackdown on political gatherings on Friday as Sharif, who was ousted by the Supreme Court previous year and convicted in absentia of corruption a week ago, flew back to rally his party ahead of the general elections.

Authorities said the suicide bomber detonated in the middle of a compound where the political meeting was taking place.

Bilour was part of the predominantly secular, ethnic Pashtun nationalist Awami National Party, which has long competed with Islamist parties for votes in Pakistan's volatile Pashtun lands, along the border with Afghanistan.

Analysts warn however that Pakistan has yet to tackle the root causes of militancy.
