  • Some of the boys rescued from a Thai cave seen in hospital in Chiang Rai

All 12 of the boys and their 25-year-old coach were brought to safety over the course of a three-day rescue, organised by Thai navy SEALs and an worldwide team of diving and caving experts, that ended on Tuesday.

The dramatic rescue of a Thai boys soccer team and their coach from a flooded cave complex this week transfixed news viewers around the world for more than two weeks, and the story is already headed for a retelling by Hollywood.

They were found after nine days, but it took a further week to bring them out safely, and one of the rescue team - a professional diver from Thailand - died in the process.

John Volanthen returned to his home country after helping rescue the 12 boys.

But as a whole, "everybody is doing well", Thongchai Lertwilairatanapong, a public health inspector, told reporters at Wednesday's news conference.

Samarn Kunan, 38, a former member of the elite navy SEALs unit, was the only casualty in a multinational operation to save the boys and their coach after monsoon rains trapped them in the cave they were exploring in northern Thailand. That's good news for the boys who had said they were looking forward to fried rice with basil.

The SEALs commander, Rear Adm. Apakorn Youkongkae, said the soccer coach, Ekkapol Chantawong, determined the order the boys from the Wild Boars soccer team should be rescued in.

"We will sing a song for him", she said.

Trump says he is ‘stable genius’ after securing extra North Atlantic Treaty Organisation funding
Trump has quipped about the USA going it alone before, only to have the administration walk back his comments. Still, Trump has been more conciliatory behind the scenes, including at a leaders' dinner Wednesday.

All members of the Wild Boards soccer team were transported by ambulance and helicopter to a hospital in the Thailand province of Chiang Rai, where they will remain until given the all clear from medical professionals.

Dr. Ken Dunham, a psychiatrist with Novant Health Psychiatric Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, told Newsweek that the boys should be monitored for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and alcohol abuse, which are the three most common problems affecting people who survive a disaster.

"On behalf of the operation unit, we want to send our condolences to him and I do have to thank him a lot", he said.

To get through flooded areas, the children were strapped to a rescue diver and guided through.

The boys, aged 11 to 16, had to dive for part of their journey out before they were put on green plastic toboggan-like stretchers and carried, at times through steep, rocky tunnels, with ropes strung overhead.

Like the Chilean rescue, the Thai drama showcases real-life courage in the face of harrowing circumstances, said Mike Medavoy, the Oscar-nominated producer of "The 33". And only a day later, a second movie was announced - but this one promising to circumvent that dreaded Hollywood tendency: whitewashing.

"The world just needs to know that what was accomplished was a once in a lifetime rescue that I think has never been done before", Anderson said.

He said, "The situation went beyond just being a rescue mission and became a symbol of unity among man".
