The Israeli military said on Wednesday that it had shot down a drone from Syria that had entered its airspace.

Earlier this week, state media said air defences struck an Israeli warplane and shot down missiles targeting the T4 air base in Homs province.

"We will continue to act decisively against any spillover and any infiltration of Israeli territory or airspace", Netanyahu said.

Wednesday's incident came as Netanyahu travelled to Russian Federation to meet President Vladimir Putin.

"The aircraft of the Israeli enemy fired several missiles in the direction of some army positions", Syrian state media cited the military source as saying on Wednesday.

Israel has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence on its doorstep in neighboring Syria.

Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting in Syria but it has carried out dozens of airstrikes on alleged arms shipments bound for the militant group Hezbollah.

For Israel, the medical aid programme can help win hearts and minds in border areas where the number of refugees has increased in recent weeks as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces advance in an offensive to recover southwest Syria.
