  • Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

Irizarry, who is Puerto Rican and was celebrating her birthday, was wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag when a white man began harassing her. The intoxicated individual involved in the incident was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Puerto Rico is a US territory and its residents are USA citizens, yet Trybus, who is white, told Irizarry that "if you're an American citizen, you should not be wearing that". Irizarry is heard telling Trybus that Puerto Rico is part of the United States as he approaches her multiple times.

"Officer, officer, I feel highly uncomfortable", Irizarry tells Connor, who does not appear to respond to her as he is addressed, and can be seen turning his back and walking toward his police vehicle. She asks the officer for help, saying the man is making her feel uncomfortable. But Conner resigned before investigators could ask him what happened during a disciplinary hearing, Pope said at a news conference Thursday. "He basically got in my face, damn near nearly touched me", Irizarry is heard saying to the camera during the incident.

He added that the park staff had apologised directly to Ms Irizarry and refunded the money she paid for her permit.

I just hope that we all are as poised as Ms. Irizarry was if and when someone gets in our face; whether for wearing a pussy hat, or a hijab, a rainbow flag or a black lives matter t-shirt.

What unfolds over the 30-minutes is a man physically and verbally intimidating a very polite and poised 24 year old American woman, while a uniformed police officer stands by and does nothing to intervene or help. The man resumes his abuse, saying: "You're not American".

Fossil of first ‘giant dinosaur’ species found in Argentina
Scientists previously believed that giant dinosaurs didn't come into existence until 25 million years later. Her group's investigations show that there is more than one way to super-size a dinosaur.

"The world is not going to change the United States of America".

The female officer then speaks with Irizarry who gives her version of the incident and the officer explains that they were called to the area after a report that a man was choking a woman. The woman, Mia Irizarry, is heard appealing to the officer to help restrain the man, but the officer doesn't appear to engage until almost 10 minutes later, when other officers arrive. The agency tweeted Monday that an investigation of the officer is ongoing.

"We don't know what was happening outside the video; we don't know what was going on inside his (Conner's) head at the time", the attorney, Tamara Cummings, said Thursday. In the background, a police officer is standing outside the park pavilion.

The flag of Puerto Rico flies outside the island's Capitol building in San Juan, July 29, 2015.

Preckwinkle called the video "completely unacceptable" and said she was "troubled" by the officer's response to the "terrible" incident. The island is a US commonwealth, and Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
