President Trump Reportedly Threatened to Pull the U.S. Out of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

U.S. President Donald Trump, left, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel pose for a photograph prior to a bilateral meeting on the eve of the G-20 summit in Hamburg, northern Germany, Thursday, July 6, 2017.

At NATO, Trump did not specify which countries had committed to what, and it remained unclear whether any had changed their plans.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg would be giving hard numbers for the increase in military spending by member nations, Trump predicted, perhaps at the end of the summit.

Trump spent the next several few hours practically ensuring it.

He then claimed Germany was "totally controlled by Russia". And he called alliance members "delinquent" on their contributions to NATO's budget. "This has gone on for many presidents, but no other president brought it up like I bring it up".

Polling from Pew Research Center indicates that many citizens of member nations are loath to deploy their own forces on NATO's behalf while expecting the United States to deploy ours. His approach has fueled concern among his critics at home and overseas that he is intent on deconstructing the postwar order and replacing it with an "America First" breed of transactional diplomacy.

Trump also said he expected Iran to call him one day with an offer to allay United States security concerns, saying Tehran was treating Washington with much more respect after he pulled the U.S. out of a nuclear deal. Later, he took to Twitter to demand that member countries get to 2 percent "IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025".

Donald Trump ‘baby blimp’ not allowed to fly over Turnberry
He will spend Thursday and Friday in England, visiting Windsor and Chequers, before heading to Scotland for the weekend. That prompted almost half a million people to sign a petition calling for Trump to be banned from the UK.

"There was no surprise in his approach on this", Trudeau said, adding that all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders were ready to demonstrate and reaffirm their commitment.

Trump also said he is "not happy about Crimea", referring to the fact Russian Federation annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

It was the most recent in a series of demands and insults that critics fear will undermine the decades-old alliance, coming days before Trump sits down with Putin at the conclusion of his closely watched European trip. Attacking allies over trade and their willingness to pay their share of military costs has played well with his political base.

He described the current situation as "disproportionate and not fair to the taxpayers of the United States".

Asked what he will discuss with the Russian president, Trump replied: "We will be asking about Syria, I will be asking about meddling, your favourite question". That is very good, especially for people in eastern Germany.

The summit's dramatic, chaotic conclusion - complete with the US president suddenly making demands following a formal communique - bore a striking similarity to Trump's departure from last month's G7 meetings in Quebec.
