The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

The director did not mention how Mr. Kavanaugh's 12 years on the US appeals court failed to draw the attention of doomsday activists until now. Trump told reporters on Sunday that he is "very close to making a decision" and all four people on the list are "excellent".

Trump, who has touted Supreme Court nominations as among the most important task of his presidency, is poised to make his announcement at 9 p.m.

"Now, I urge the Senate to get to work and confirm our nominee".

Kavanaugh ruled in one case involving abortion past year and is considered a likely opponent of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Kavanaugh, 53, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is a favorite of the conservative legal establishment because of his long record on issues ranging from the separation of powers and executive privilege to abortion, immigration and gun rights.

Widespread shock and outright hysteria quickly followed the news that President Trump would within two years get a second U.S. Supreme Court pick.

According to the Associated Press, "Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues.

Top contenders for the role have included federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman.

A fellow judge there, Maryanne Trump Barry, one of the president's sisters, reportedly has recommended him to her brother. Kelly Ayotte served as the sherpa for Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017.

Since Kennedy declared his retirement almost two weeks ago, conservative groups have been gearing up for a battle of a lifetime as Democrats vow to do everything possible to block President Trump's choice.

Future Republican presidents should be expected to continue this transparent approach, including by producing an up-front list of potential nominees, and Democrats should create their own version of it on the other side.

While the President's choice of Gorsuch to replace Scalia ensured the iconic conservative justice was replaced with another person highly regarded by conservatives, the vacancy created by Kennedy has given Trump the opportunity to replace a frequent swing vote with a conservative name.

Kethledge serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"What matters is not a judge's political views, but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the Constitution require".

The anxiety over defections speaks to the narrowness of the Republican's majority in the Senate.

But his supporters note his experience and a wide range of legal opinions.

"The far right has total control of the Congress, they have total control of the administration, now they want total control of the judiciary, and I'm just not going to allow that to happen and I'm going to keep fighting against it", he said.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee began to discuss the matter Tuesday evening, but they had not yet made any determination on whether to ask the White House to turn over all the documents from Kavanaugh's time as Bush's staff secretary and as an associate counsel.
