The Convair-340 plane - built in 1954 - was due to soon be flown to the Aviodrome air museum in the Netherlands.

One person died at the scene and the several injuries range from minor to critical, according to Russel Meiring, a spokesperson for emergency service ER24.

"We saw the plane and we heard a thumping sound", adds Storm.

Emergency services said the aircraft crashed on Tuesday after it took off on a test flight from a small airport.

"We are unsure as yet of how the incident occurred".

"Paramedics are treating the patients and will thereafter transport them to nearby hospital for further treatment".

The plane had the words "Martin's Air Charter" painted on it, which was a previous name of Dutch cargo airline Martinair.
