Johnson and Davis resignations 'matters for Theresa May'

British Prime Minister Theresa May named Jeremy Hunt to the job of foreign secretary, after the resignation of Boris Johnson on Monday.

Born Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, he is also known for his displays of questionable sportsmanship.

Although it has caused a headache, May was quick to capitalize on the fact that two of her biggest problems extricated themselves from her inner circle; she ceremoniously replaced Davis and Johnson with more amiable substitutes.

Mrs May's new-look cabinet met for the first time on Tuesday, after a string of resignations over her Brexit strategy left her government in crisis.

This is because, even though these hardliners don't yet have the 48 signatures needed to call a vote on her leadership (and certainly not the 159 needed to actually oust her), May's cobbled-together majority in the House of Commons is so slim that even a handful of them could derail the process. The direct effect of European Union law will end when we leave the EU.

"The fact there may be contrarian voices in the United Kingdom is nothing new, we have been listening to them all along", he said.

"It's a good thing that we have proposals on the table", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the Balkans summit in London.

But she said: "We do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honour the result of the referendum". Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

"We will not get a clean, democratic Brexit under Theresa May and if the Conservative Party don't come to their senses, then yes, when there is a leadership contest in Ukip at the end of March next year, then I would seriously consider throwing my hat back in the ring".

Some 48 Tory MPs - 15% of the party's 316-strong representation in the Commons - must write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to trigger a no-confidence vote.

It operates like this: if an iPhone or iPad is not unlocked after one hour, data access through the Lightning port will shut down. At first we thought we would have to wait until iOS 12 this fall to see this feature, but here it is.

The New Statesman says Leadsom is also "in with a shout" for the leadership, but the Daily Mirror points out that her failed bid to beat May in 2016 could damage her chances.

US President Donald Trump, asked about the unfolding drama ahead of his visit to Britain later this week, said it appeared "in somewhat turmoil".

Asked about Boris Johnson's resignation, Trump added: "Boris Johnson is a friend of mine". Gauke said. "The challenge is all very well for people to say I wouldn't do this".

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The resignation of two British cabinet ministers are matters for the Prime Minster Theresa May, a spokesperson for the Taoiseach has said.

According to the proposals agreed upon by the British government on Friday, the United Kingdom and the European Union ahead of Brexit would maintain "a common rule book for industrial goods and agricultural products", and London would commit to "ongoing harmonization" with European Union rules on goods to ensure frictionless trade at ports and the border with Ireland.

Britain is "truly headed for the status of colony", he said, adding that the "dream" of Brexit "is dying".

The responsibility for leading the negotiations should now go to an "enthusiastic believer in your approach, and not merely a reluctant conscript", he said.

"I had with David Davis a frank and cordial relationship, and now I will work next Monday with this negotiator appointed by Mrs May", he told AFP.
