  • Whatsapp to introduce new tool to address fake news

WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Facebook, has 200 million users in India alone and has made a decision to use a variety of mediums to spread awareness about fake news.

Will this feature also detect fake news websites that try to make money off a legitimate news source? The Suspicious Link Detection feature is reportedly in its testing stage.

WhatsApp also reminded its users that fake news "often" goes viral and just because "a message is shared many times, does not make it true".

India has witnessed several lynching cases triggered by fake messages circulated on WhatsApp.

Do you think this step taken by WhatsApp will help in solving the problems of lynching across the country?

Starting this week, we're rolling out a new feature that lets you see which messages have been forwarded.

United States steps up China trade spat with $200bn new tariffs
The tariffs could take effect after public consultations end on August 30, according to a statement from the U.S. China has vowed to retaliate dollar-for-dollar to any further USA tariffs.

Experts said the that the need to curb fake news has also assumed urgency ahead of India's general elections scheduled for next year - WhatsApp has become the favored medium for political parties to target voters. As per the report, when you receive a message that contains a link, WhatsApp analyses the link in order to detect if it may redirect to a fake or alternative website. The ads will run in both English and Hindi and appear in national and regional newspapers around the country. "We will build on these efforts", outlines the news advertisement.

The newest version of WhatsApp includes the feature, which marks forwarded messages in subtle but still hard to miss italicized text above the content of a message.

There will be a menu option of Send Messages under the Group Settings, which has two options: "Only Admins" and "All Participants". Misinformation spread through the app has been linked to the mob killing of multiple men who were targeted by false rumors accusing them of kidnapping children.

WhatsApp is taking steps to put a stop to spam circulation on its platform.

With India being its biggest market with over 200 million users, the Facebook Inc-owned messenger service had asserted that it responds to "valid" law enforcement requests in investigating crimes.
