In his resignation letter, Johnson savaged May's strategy, accusing her of allowing an optimistic Brexit vision to become clouded by a failure of ambition.

British Prime Minister Theresa May selected Jeremy Hunt to replace Boris Johnson as foreign secretary Monday as she sought to re-stabilize her government following a pair of high-profile resignations over Brexit.

But it soon began to unravel, when Davis resigned late on Sunday and launched a no-holds-barred attack on her plan, calling it "dangerous" and one which would give "too much away, too easily" to European Union negotiators, who would simply ask for more.

If Davis's resignation rattled May, Johnson's shook the foundations of her government. See PA story POLITICS Brexit.

May's office said in a terse statement that the prime minister had accepted Johnson's resignation and would name a replacement soon.

"It is as though we are sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them", Johnson wrote in a letter that underscored his credentials as a champion of full-speed Brexit.

"As I said then, the Government now has a song to sing". "The trouble is that I have practiced the words over the weekend and find that they stick in the throat".

A spokesman for the Department for Transport said in response: "We share the mayor's concerns about the potential benefits of improved cab design and we want to see changes in the industry".

Just on Friday, May announced she had secured the backing of her whole Cabinet for her Brexit plan and told ministers to either back it or resign.

Pro-Brexit lawmakers say May's plan for free trade and regulatory alignment with the bloc will stop Britain forging an independent economic course.

The BBC reported that Johnson said in his resignation letter that May has put off decisions about how Britain will leave the European Union, warning that "we appear to be heading for a semi-Brexit, with large parts of the economy still locked in the EU system, but with no United Kingdom control over that system".

The Government went on to explain that it held Brexit discussions with senior officials from the UK Government yesterday afternoon, as the two Governments continue to work closely together going forward.

He has always supported a so-called "hard Brexit", which supports relinquishing access to the bloc's single market in exchange for full border control. Everything she said, "Brexit means Brexit", "we must leave the customs union", she has given away.
