World's largest mobile phone factory opens outside Indian capital

The mobile phone plant can produce almost 12 crore mobile phones every year, and will create 15,000 job opportunities. The new facility is spread across an area of over 140,000 square meters. "In the past four years, the number of mobile manufacturing factories has gone up from two to 120".

Giving a thumbs up to his government's Make In India initiative, PM Modi said, "Make in India initiative is getting support from all across the world".

The facility is expected to help Samsung build more cheap phones to make gains in India, a market dominated by the likes of Xiaomi and Lenovo's Motorola unit.

Last year, Samsung announced budget of Rs 4915 crore to expand the phone manufacturing factory, and now, the plant is ready to manufacture nearly every model of Samsung. 35,000 new jobs would be generated due to this new factory.

Earlier, South Korean President Moon, who is on a three-day visit to India, addressed at the India-Korea business forum and visited Gandhi Smriti with Prime Minister Modi.

"India is witnessing dynamic development", Moon said, adding that his country would contribute actively to the "Make in India" policy aimed at boosting Indian manufacturing.

Samsung is expected to create 15,000 jobs through the new manufacturing unit. "The investment reaffirms Samsungs commitment to Make- in-India and Make-for-India and to the state of Uttar Pradesh", Samsung India had stated in a statement.

Samsung has two manufacturing plants - in Noida and in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu - five R&D centres, and one design centre in Noida, employing over 70,000 people and expanding its network to over 1.5 lakh retail outlets. He spoke of the expansion of smartphones, broadband and data connectivity, which he described as signs of a digital revolution in India.
