Tropical Storm Chris forms off East Coast

Tropical Storm Chris, located off the North Carolina coast, was forecast to become a hurricane late Monday or Tuesday morning, the National Hurricane Center reported.

"Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic states during the next few days", the National Hurricane Center said.

As of the 11AM advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Chris has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour. with a central pressure of 999 mb.

Chris is relatively close to the North Carolina coast, but no watches or warnings are in effect there.

Beryl on Thursday became the first hurricane of the 2018 season, but even as it gained strength, meteorologists predicted the storm, which was smaller than typical, was likely to run into adverse weather conditions and lose strength.

On the forecast track, the remnants of Beryl will move across the northeastern Caribbean Sea to the south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and Monday.

Many North Carolina beaches were closed to swimming on Monday due to heavy surf and risky rip currents, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Though the tropical storm is not really moving anywhere, it is still strengthening.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Beryl - the second named storm of this season - is expected to dump heavy rain over the Lesser Antilles at the end of the weekend.
