  • Evel Knievel jumping the fountains at Caesars Palace in 1967

Honoring the man who paved the way for dozens of daredevils, Travis Pastrana succeeded in triplicating three of Evel Knievel's iconic motorcycle jumps Sunday night.

Pastrana, 34, an 11-time X Games champion, wore a red, white and blue jumpsuit similar to what Knievel wore in his heyday and rode an Indian Scout FTR750 V-twin motorcycle that was described as being similar to Knievel's Harley flat-track motorcycles.

Travis Pastrana tackled some of Evel Knievel's most iconic jumps; some Knievel completed and some he didn't.

The second jump re-created Knievel's attempt to clear 14 buses back in 1975.

After his first two jumps over the cars and buses, Pastrana had a police escort while riding the same motorcycle along Las Vegas Boulevard all while popping wheelies and stopping to high-five and shake hands with fans.

Bottas, still on medium tires, was soon struggling, and Ferrari was celebrating when Raikkonen went past to go third. However, questions will again be asked about Mercedes' tactics after deciding not to pit to replace the tires.

What do 52 crushed cars, 16 Greyhound buses and the fountain outside of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas have in common?

Knievel's failed attempt at sticking his landing in 1967 is a reminder that though they make it look easy, it takes one steel pair of cojones to take the risk.

Performed live for the History Channel, Pastrana launched himself into the record books while honoring one of his heroes. I proposed to my wife here, I had [the] first Nitro Circus show here. "I'm not done yet, but this was definitely one of the coolest things, the coolest thing I've ever been able to do". The stunts air live Sunday as part of "Evel Live" beginning at 8 p.m. EST on the History Channel. Knievel famously crashed after missing the landing on that jump. He ended the night by cruising 149 feet over the fountains in front of Caesars Palace. Where, I'm jumping basically a street bike. "It's not the longest jump, but by far the hardest".

While Knievel might not have necessarily been the most successful stunt artist in terms of, uh, completing all his jumps and stunts, he was among the most daring ever and inspired a generation to think bigger.

After finishing with a few burnouts, Pastrana celebrated his triplicating feat by diving into the fountain.
