Eight boys have been rescued so far while the remaining four boys and their coach still remained trapped in the cave.

Thai army has reported that the operations will be resumed on Tuesday, when the large rescue team of local and foreign divers will again venture into the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai for a third day, to attempt to bring out the four remaining boys and their coach.

The Thai Navy Seals, who have played a critical role in the treacherous rescue efforts, confirmed that four more boys were retrieved from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave.

Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osattanakorn said the second phase began at 11 a.m. and authorities "hope to hear good news in the next few hours".

The boys had a good appetite but were mainly being given bland, easily digestible foods.

Officials lavished praise on the Thai and global divers who executed the unsafe rescue mission, guiding boys who can barely swim and have no diving experience through a treacherous 4-kilometer-long (2 1/2-mile) escape route that twisted and turned and rose and fell inside the mountain cave complex.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, head of the rescue operation, said a team of divers went back into the cave Monday morning, local time. He asked for three more days to complete the rescue mission.

The team became trapped on June 23 when they set out to explore the cave after soccer practice and rains flooded the tunnels, trapping them inside.

The second group of 4 that were pulled out afterwards are aged between 12 and 14.

They are part of a youth soccer team known as the Wild Boars. A health official said Tuesday that all eight boys are in "high spirits". On Sunday, officials waited until several hours after the rescued boys had been transported to hospitals to announce their rescue. Last week, Musk sent engineers from two of his companies, SpaceX and Boring Co., to assist Thai officials in the rescue effort, which comprises a large team of global diving, engineering and medical experts, among other professionals.

Mr Jesada said they were uncertain what type of infections the boys could face "because we have never experienced this kind of issue from a deep cave".

Sunday and Monday's rescue missions took between nine and 11 hours.

Musk on Sunday tweeted that he was sending a "kid-size submarine" to the rescuers in the hopes that it would be "useful".

The names of the rescued boys have not been released out of "respect for those families whose sons are still trapped inside", the mission chief said.

A witness near the cave told the Reuters news agency that medical workers carried four people to emergency rescue vehicles. Highlighting the extreme dangers, a former Thai Navy SEAL died Friday while replenishing the oxygen canisters laid along the route.

Relatives were able to see them through a glass partition, Narongsak said.
