Instead, Starbucks announced in a press release, it will start using "strawless lids" and straws made from "alternative materials", such as paper or "compostable plastic".

The strawless lid has already been in use at numerous company's stores for certain kinds of cold drinks like cold foam and "draft nitro", the coffee drink that comes out of a keg, mixed with nitrogen.

Starbucks announced plans to eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from its stores worldwide by 2020. Plastic straws have become a flashpoint.

Pressure has been building for businesses to shed single-use plastic straws due to the threat they pose to marine life and the health of the world's oceans.

For users who still want their drinks with a straw, the company said paper or biodegradable plastic will be available by request.

Those 19m products are found in around 6.9m homes worldwide, Sonos says, and the immediate upshot is more music being played. The company did not specify how many shares would be for sale, nor did it list an estimated offering price.

In the United States, local governments are already putting similar restrictions into place.

A number of restaurants and private establishments also have taken measures to curb their use of plastic straws. Last week, Seattle became the latest city to ban plastic utensils and straws.

Other cities, like Fort Meyers, have banned plastic straws.

In a statement, CEO Kevin Johnson called the move away from plastic straws a "significant milestone" in the company's sustainability efforts.

"With 8 million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines, and we are grateful for Starbucks leadership in this space", Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancys Trash Free Seas program, said in the release.
