'Ant-Man & the Wasp' Dominates Weekend Box Office!

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film earned $76 million domestically and raked in an additional $85 million overseas for a grand total of $161 million, which is higher than the studio had initially projected. Unfortunately, the film also saw a steep 30 percent decline from Friday to Saturday, explaining the lowered opening weekend estimate. I'll probably see it this week, but I don't think Ant-Man and the Wasp comes off as a "must see" Marvel movie.

Though Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't throwing up the same kind of numbers that bigger franchises in the MCU normally do, Disney is still quite satisfied with the numbers.

Heroes come in all sizes, according to the marketing for the original Ant-Man movie.

With a production budget around $162 million, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" looks like another win for Marvel. That could make it hard to surpass the $180 million domestic run of the original Ant-Man, which had some impressive legs, but only time will tell. Highlights include an impressive $20.9 million opening in South Korea followed by Mexico ($6.7m), Indonesia ($5.6m), Russian Federation ($4.9m), Australia ($4.7m), Taiwan ($4.6m), Hong Kong ($3.6m), Brazil ($3.5m), Philippines ($3.1m), Malaysia ($3.0m), Thailand ($3.0m). Over the next few weeks, rollout continues in Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Even more impressive? As of this weekend, Incredibles 2 is now the top-grossing animated film of all time - not adjusted for inflation - having surpassed fellow Pixar film, Finding Dory, with $503 million. The dinosaur blockbuster, which just crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, has earned $725 million from overseas alone.

He spoke of the expansion of smartphones, broadband and data connectivity, which he described as signs of a digital revolution in India.

Industry prognosticators were placing the sequel at $80 to $85 million after that juggernaut event, and while Disney set the floor for Ant-Man and the Wasp in their own projections at $70 million, this isn't exactly an exciting number for the Mouse House. Similar to Solo, Infinity War brought in just under $1 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $675 million.

This is intriguing, because in a movie landscape where doomsayers constantly predict the breaking point of superhero movie saturation is right around the corner, the masked and caped genre in general, and Marvel Studios in particular, have been doing much of the heavy lifting at the box office. The First Purge actually opened on July 4, and pulled in $31 million from Wednesday to Sunday.

It also speaks to audiences.

Internationally, The First Purge debuted in 26 markets with an estimated $10.9 million. The movie had a $33.8 million opening day and a $11.5 million Thursday night preview launch, which accounts for $45.3 million (well over half) of the opening weekend. This is a notably strong performance given the impact of England's World Cup Quarter-Final game.
