200+ Cases Of Infections Following Parasites In Del Monte Vegetables — CDC

  • CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

The CDC recommends those who are ill with the parasite get an anti-biotic, plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.

Cyclosporiasis is an infection in the intestines caused by the cyclospora parasite.

'Most people reported buying the trays at Kwik Trip convenience stores, ' the CDC said.

At least 212 people in four Midwest states have been sickened as of Monday by a parasite found in plastic vegetable trays sold under the Del Monte brand.

Still, products distributed to each of the four states, as well as IL and IN, have been recalled.

Six, 12, and 28-ounce trays in clear packaging with fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots and dill dip have been recalled.

'Most people infected with cyclosporiasis develop diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements, ' the FDA said.

Symptoms related to the outbreak began on May 14.

The vegetable trays were recalled in June, but on Thursday the CDC confirmed 212 cases have cropped up so far. The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak.

A previous major cyclosporiasis outbreak was reported in 2015, when 546 individuals were infected across 31 states. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue.

The FDA has not yet identified ingredients linked to the outbreak, saying only that each component is under investigation.

If left untreated, the illness may last anywhere from a few days to a month, or longer. "FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week. If you have any of the vegetable trays in your home do not eat them and throw them away.
