Defending women's champion Garbine Muguruza has crashed out of Wimbledon in the second round after a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Belgium's Alison van Uytvanck.

Even though Federer downed Cilic in the 2017 finale, he'll be relieved to see the 2014 US Open victor leave from his half of the draw.

Muguruza and Cilic's departures followed losses by pre-tournament women's favorite Petra Kvitova, former champion Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, although the Dane faced the ever unsafe Ekaterina Makarova. I wasn't thinking I had to defend anything, I was just thinking of trying to win.' Muguruza will now have much time to rest, as her next tournament scheduled is Rogers Cup in Montreal in one month.

On her opponent's performance she added: "She played big today, she took a lot of risks and it worked for her". That's also why she could develop that kind of level.

"I had (the) pressure (a) little bit of (possibly) losing that (first) set but I didn't panic".

In other women's matches, former Wimbledon finalist Angelique Kerber had to come from a set down to oust American qualifier Claire Liu in the second round.

Bouchard, who also reached the women's Wimbledon final in 2014, had the chance to serve for the second set against Barty but lost four games in a row to sink in straight sets.

"I was just not feeling as comfortable as yesterday with hitting", he said.

"Inside I was, like, dying, especially serving out for the match", said van Uytvanck.

But Gareth Southgate's side also did well to respond after conceding an equaliser so late, and obviously recovering from that. It's hard to play against them and to score against them. "They wouldn't be where they are if they weren't", he said.

Top-seed Simona Halep and seventh-seed Karolina Pliskova are the only players left in the top eight.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios will square off with Japan's Kei Nishikori in round three.

"Today when we came back, obviously he served two good service games in that third set, came back two sets to one", Cilic told reporters.

Halep, the top seed, avoided the upset bug on Thursday, defeating China's Zheng Saisai 7-5, 6-0 to advance to the third round.

Britain's 22nd seed Johanna Konta was ousted by Dominika Cibulkova.

She enters the third round for the first time at Wimbledon to face Estonia's Anett Kontaveit.

Van Uytvanck, who is ranked 47th in the world, stormed to a 4-2 lead in the second set and Muguruza's frustration was in full view.

Godina made the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time. "Hopefully, tomorrow I'll see the practice session how it feels", the 12-time major champion said.

The Belgian, who has been open about her relationship on social media, talked about it publicly for the first time in a segment of a television sports show back home earlier in the year, where she said the couple were going to live together soon.
