  • New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Depression Two formed Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of French Guyana.

NWS forecasters said the system located about 350 miles off the Carolina coast is becoming better organized and could be declared a tropical depression late Friday, but the Carolinas will probably not feel any impacts over the weekend.

A tropical depression off the North Carolina coast is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Saturday night or Sunday but is expected to move north and away from the Carolinas.

However, upper-level winds are expected to become less conducive for development by the weekend, when the system approaches the Lesser Antilles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1009 mb (29.80 inches).

Hurricane Beryl has weakened into a tropical storm, and further weakening is likely as Beryl accelerates towards the Lesser Antilles.

It will continue to track west or west-northwest at 15 to 20 miles per hour over the tropical waters of the Atlantic.

Cooler sea surface temperatures and strong trade winds created across the Atlantic Basin by the Pacific warm-water phenomena known as El Niño inhibit the growth of storms.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 miles per hour (85 km/h) with higher gusts.

Last years season spared Bermuda, but battered the Caribbean, as well as the United States.

Due to changing environmental conditions in the main development region for tropical storms, CSU has since lowered their forecast to a below average number of storms.

The NHC said that the system is expected to dissipate however it will still bring gusty winds and showers to the Lesser Antilles. So for the 5 days, the storm poses no threats to the First Coast.

Subtropical Storm Alberto became the first named storm of the 2018 season.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded Beryl to a hurricane early Friday morning.
