She Was 'in Agony,' Still Tried to Call Off Ambulance

  • Injured woman begs people not to call ambulance because she can’t afford it

A woman fell at the Massachusetts Avenue station in Boston, USA, during rush hour and was trapped between the platform and the train.

After the woman was freed, Polanco stayed to help and talked with her. Left "in agony and weeping" as commuters rocked the train back and forth in an effort to free her, she begged them not to call an ambulance, as she said, "It's $3000.I can't afford that".

'Do you know how much an ambulance costs?' she wept, while explaining it would cost a few thousand dollars. The story picked up on Twitter when Boston Globe reporter Maria Cramer posted about the incident after witnessing the aftermath of the accident on Friday.

The accident happened on Friday, and a Boston Globe reporter on the scene described how the woman slipped between the subway train and the platform, trapping her leg. "I can't afford that".

Ms Cramer said despite the woman clearly being in "agony", she seemed to be more concerned by the financial impact of treatment.

According to a police report, the woman was taken to Boston Medical Center with a serious laceration that exposed the bone on her left thigh.

LeBron James Approved All Of Lakers’ Recent Acquisitions
The power forward shot 45.8% from the field, and served as a nice complement to the all-around playing style of LeBron James . Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Lance Stephenson , JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo will all be joining on one-year deals.

Another bystander told CNN, "She made it a point to say 'you don't understand, I have bad insurance.'" The woman was eventually convinced to go with emergency medical technicians who arrived at the scene. A 2012 federal investigation found the median ambulance cost per ride was between $224 and $2,204.

However, as bystanders rushed to call an ambulance, the 45-year-old woman pleaded with them not to - for one heartbreaking reason which sums up the tragic reality of everyday life in the United States for many of its people.

Emergency Medical Technicians arrived and the woman agreed to go with them.

Although her bone was not broken, the EMTs who responded said she would need surgery.

"In the face of a grave injury, a series of calculations follow: The clear and urgent need for medical attention is weighed against the uncertain and potentially monumental expense of even basic services, like a bandage or a ride to the hospital, and that cost, in turn, weighed against all the known expenses of living that run through any given head on any given day", the article read.
