Vettel secured second place on Sunday's grid - 0.44s off Lewis Hamilton on pole position - after one of the closest qualifying sessions at Silverstone in recent memory.

"Mercedes have had a lot of success over the last couple of years".

Hamilton will be in search of a record sixth British Grand Prix victory Sunday - he's now tied with five along with Jim Clark and Alain Prost.

"I was just praying I could do it for you guys", he said. "Our downforce level, I think, has been good but you see how close it is between us".

"For me it feels like one of the best laps that I have been able to produce", the 33-year-old told reporters later.

His lap of one minute 25.892 seconds was a track record.

"I would say it felt like the most pressurized lap that I've ever had. I was shaking through the emotion, the adrenaline rush was way above the limit that I had experienced before". "I was pretty happy with the first run in Q3 and I knew I had a little bit more in sector three, and bits around the track, which I think I got right on the second attempt, but I seemed to lose a little bit down the straights, I'm not sure why".

"I didn't leave anything on the table today", he added.

Kurz called for the agency to have 10,000 border guards by 2020, seven years earlier than anticipated by Brussels. However, she added EU tariff negotiations required a "common European position and we are still working on it".

England's opening goal against Sweden filtered through as Hamilton conducted his media duties. I can't really explain it. I'll start the wave, and let them continue'.

"To be honest this morning no, I wasn't sure if I could do qualifying", Vettel admitted.

"I don't know what happened, but it was a bit stiff".

'We loosened it up with physio.

Hamilton was forced to retire from the Austrian Grand Prix but will be confident of overhauling his rival from Ferrari with 12 races still to go - starting with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.

The Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth and sixth.

Williams has only four points this season and Harris acknowledged on Friday she had been "dreading" the team's home race. The Russian was at least able to drive back to the pit lane, where Williams deputy team principal Claire Harris held her head in her hands.

But despite his concerns, he was fit enough to take part in qualifying after some medical treatment.
