  • The Klamathon fire burning both sides of I-5 south of the Hilt interchange as of 8:30 p.m. Thursday

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for the area, allowing state resources to be devoted to fighting the wildfire and keeping people safe.

San Diego Gas and Electric says almost 1,700 customers are without power after the fire damaged the electric system. Fire bans have also been enacted by many counties.

On the California-Oregon border, the fire ignited Thursday and moved swiftly through the region that is home to many retirees, said Ray Haupt, chairman of the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors.

In Colorado, officials said fire crews had made "much progress" battling the Spring Creek fire, which broke out on June 27 and has consumed 106,985 acres (43,295 hectares).

Authorities did not release other details on the death that has been blamed on the fire, which has threatened several hundred homes around the town of Hornbrook, Calif., near the border with Oregon.

CAL FIRE reported at 6 a.m. MDT Friday that the Klamathon Fire along Interstate 5 just south of the OR border is now 8,000 acres with "multiple structures threatened and damaged OR destroyed".

The flames forced more than 2,000 people to flee their homes, and left thousands more without power, prompting the emergency declaration which frees additional funds for the firefighting effort. The fire had burned 50 to 80 acres as of Saturday morning and was only 5 percent contained. Hornbrook is located in Siskyou County.

The fire is being fueled by hot weather and extreme winds, conditions that are expected throughout the weekend, Brady said.

Farther north in Oregon, authorities urged hikers and other outdoors enthusiasts to avoid forested areas near the Oregon-California border, where a blaze has killed one person.

In the south, a wind-driven fire that erupted Friday night burned an estimated 20 structures, including homes, and forced evacuations in the Santa Barbara County community of Goleta, authorities said.

The areas of concern include the Pacific Crest Trail, Mount Ashland and the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a powerful fire burned numerous homes in Santa Barbara County, "with an evacuation order extending to more than 2,000 residents". Cal Fire said it poses danger to about 990 structures.
