  • Tropical Depression Beryl is seen in this NASA handout satellite image dated

It is located about 865 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and is moving west at 14 mph.

As of noon on Friday, Beryl was packing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

Hurricane Beryl, which the National Hurricane Center described as a small storm in terms of area coverage but a "brazen" one, was forecast to pass through the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday.

On the forecast track, the centre of Hurricane Beryl will approach the Lesser Antilles over the weekend and cross the island chain late Sunday or Monday.

"If this trend continues, then Beryl may be downgraded to a tropical storm later this morning".

By 11 a.m. EDT, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour (48 kph).

With tropical-storm-force winds extending out to 35 miles from the center of circulation and hurricane-force winds extending only ten miles out, Beryl is very compact.

"It is possible that we could have hurricane watches up for some of those islands by tonight", said Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. A tropical storm watch was issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, where conditions are expected to deteriorate Saturday night with a potential for a foot of rain in some areas.

Hurricane Beryl still poses no threat to Florida as of Friday morning.

The storm should begin to weaken once it reaches the eastern Caribbean on Monday.

Beryl is the easternmost hurricane to form from an African wave in July on record, according to University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy.

According to the BWS, the system was expected to stay to the west of Bermuda but may result in moderate winds across Bermuda as it moves north tomorrow.

Meteorologist Odalys Martinez said in a phone interview that conditions would deteriorate late Sunday, with up to 3 inches (7.62 centimetres) of rain possible. A favorable weather pattern during the next few hours will help the storm strengthen before it reaches the Lesser Antilles and dives into the warmer Caribbean Sea waters.
