The woman who anonymously accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of groping her at a music festival nearly two decades ago "reluctantly" released a statement Friday as the spotlight intensifies on the incident. However, he acknowledged the woman who made the allegation may have experienced their interaction differently.
"I would never presume to speak for her, but I know there is an very bad lot of reflection to be had as we move forward as a society", he said. "If I had known you were reporting for a national newspaper, I would never have been so forward".
Shouldn't Trudeau also be measured by the "I believe her" standard? But he said that now and at the time the editorial came out, he was "very confident that I hadn't acted in a way that I felt was in any way inappropriate".
The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Kokanee Summit, where money was being raised for the Avalanche Foundation, a charity Trudeau became involved with after his brother, Michel, died in an avalanche in 1998.
The incident reffered to in the Editorial did occur, as reported.
"I don't want to speak for her, I don't want to presume how she feels now", he said.
Trudeau has said he did not act inappropriately towards the reporter but acknowledges she may have had an entirely different perspective.

Asked for further clarification, Trudeau said, "I apologized in the moment", adding that neither he nor anyone on his team has reached out to the woman.
