The U.S. ambassador to Russian Federation on Thursday described President Donald Trump's one-on-one meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Helsinki later this month as an accomplishment "in itself".

"The ball is really in Russia's court and the president will continue to hold Russian Federation responsible for its malign activity", Mr. Huntsman told reporters.

"We're entering [the talks with Russia] with our eyes wide open, but peace is always worth the effort", he added.

He's expected to travel to Helsinki on July 15th and hold a one-on-one meeting with Putin, followed by a larger meeting with aides and a working lunch the next day.

Huntsman also said Trump is pursuing the meeting in the interests of national security, to reduce tensions and lead to constructive engagement.

Separately, U.S. Representative to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison told reporters Thursday that the alliance is moving forward together, and "everyone has the same goal, and that is a strong deterrent and an alliance that is unified" against threats like Russian Federation and China.

When questioned about the need for a private meeting between the two, a White House official said it's coming at the right time for direct communication and referred to Trump's recent success at the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
