  • Idris Elba joins Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the Fast and Furious spin-off which arrives next year

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's Fast & Furious spinoff, tentatively titled Hobbs and Shaw, has added Idris Elba to play the film's primary villain. The project, which centers on the pair of characters from the main film franchise, is set to arrive in theaters on August 2, 2019. While the characters have often been at odds on-screen, the new movie will see the unlikely duo team up to face off against Elba's character. The spinoff stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in their respective roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.

Hobbs and Shaw, meet your new villain. Universal Pictures, the studio behind the movies, has been looking for a way to get a spin-off greenlit since the actor joined the franchise for "Fast Five".

Lance Stephenson , Rajon Rondo , JaVale McGee - none of these guys can really shoot, and they're all ball-dominant players. For example, Seth Curry agreed to terms on a two-year, $2.75 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers .

Little is known about what Elba's role will entail, but the script is now being worked on by Chris Morgan who's written every Fast entry since Tokyo Drift. Neal H. Moritz will bankroll this film under his banner Original Film alongside Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions partners, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, Statham and Chris Morgan for his eponymous production company.
