Susan Collins Won't Support Anti-Roe v. Wade Nominee

Senators Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have voiced support for the legality of abortion, with Collins saying that she would find any nominee who opposes the Roe v. Wade decision to be "unacceptable".

Trump is moving quickly to fill the vacancy that will be created when Justice Anthony M. Kennedy retires from the court July 31.

White House counsel Don McGahn, who has been eyeing the White House exits amid tensions with Trump in recent months, will oversee the "selection and overall confirmation process" for the President's second Supreme Court nominee, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday, signaling he will remain White House counsel for at least several more months. "Those are people who are under very serious consideration, two of them as you know are people who throw the process to some extent", Leo said.

"I told [Trump] that I was looking for a nominee that would demonstrate a respect for precedent, a long-standing and vital tenet of our judicial system", Collins said Sunday on ABC. So a nominee's position on whether or not they respect precedent will tell me a lot about whether they would overturn Roe v. Wade.

"I may have two of them come up, like the old days, to Bedminster", Trump said, referring to the staff and Cabinet interviews he held there in late 2016 during the presidential transition.

The move is part of a broader push by the White House to rapidly confirm a replacement for Kennedy before the court's new term begins in October.

Since each Supreme Court justice needs 51 votes to be confirmed, Democrats would only need one Republican to side against the nominee, assuming no Democrats break rank.

The Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973, but anti-abortion advocates hope Roe v. Wade will soon be overruled if Trump gets the chance to appoint a justice who could cast a potentially decisive vote against it. "If he picks someone who is hardcore on Roe v. Wade or hardcore on repealing health care that's a bigger lift".

CBS News says it has learned that DC Circuit Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Chicago Circuit Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett are now Trump's leading contenders for the appointment to the nation's highest court. Also of interest are Amul Thapar, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati; Brett Kavanaugh, a former clerk for Kennedy who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.; and Amy Coney Barrett, who serves on the federal appeals court in Chicago.

Judge Barrett serves on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals; she was a law professor at her alma mater Notre Dame before joining the appeals court past year.

"So I'm actually quite happy about it", he said. Tim Kaine said the future of Roe v. Wade is "very much in jeopardy" during a campaign event on Monday morning in Town Center.
