Ramos filed a lawsuit against the newspaper for defamation in 2012, one year after it wrote about his guilty plea to criminal harassment in a column.
Also killed were editorial page editor Gerald Fischman, special projects editor Wendi Winters, reporter John McNamara and sales assistant Rebecca Smith. He says Ramos barricaded the exit door so employees couldn't escape, and that one of the five people who were killed was shot while trying to escape out that exit. The story, which was written by staff writer Eric Thomas Hartley, detailed the case where Ramos repeatedly contacted a former high school classmate via Facebook, according to court documents.
Reporters from the paper covered the story. In 2013, Marquardt said he had even spoken to police about filing a restraining order against Ramos.

Authorities responded to the scene within a minute of the shooting, and Ramos was arrested while also hiding under a desk with the shotgun on the floor nearby, police said. A judge dismissed the suit, telling Ramos that he hadn't shown "anything that was published about you is, in fact, false".
Jayne Miller, a reporter with Baltimore's WBAL-TV, said Thursday that she spoke to a woman who claimed Ramos had stalked, harassed and sued her - becoming "fixated" to the point where she became frightened enough to move out of state.
"That door is never locked from the inside out", he said, "And as soon as that happened it signaled to me, 'OK, this is intentional".
"I further certify I then did proceed to the office of respondent Capital-Gazette Communications ... with the objective of killing every person present", the document says.
The suspect damaged his fingers in possible efforts to disguise his identification before the "targeted attack" with a shotgun, police said. It is owned by The Baltimore Sun.
Police found evidence at the suspect's house the attack on the Capital Gazette in Annapolis was planned.
