ASO and Sky are now refusing to comment further and are unlikely to do so before the hearing.

"The Tour de France wants at all costs to avoid being in the same situation as the recent Giro d'Italia, where the final victory of Froome is now marked with an asterisk", reads the report.

He has continued racing while the case is ongoing, which he is permitted to do since salbutamol is a specified substance rather than one that is banned outright.

Should Froome take part he will be the hot favorite to win the race as, at 33, he remains the best three-week tour rider on the contemporary cycling scene.

A final decision on the organisers' attempt to prevent him from taking part is expected to be made by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, which is to make a ruling Tuesday, Le Monde said.

Heat Wave: Friday to kick off first heat wave of 2018
Anyone spending significant time outdoors tomorrow is susceptible to heat stroke or heat exhaustion , the weather service said . Residents are warned to "drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun", the agency says.

Team Sky has responded, saying: "We are confident that Chris will be riding the Tour as we know he has done nothing wrong".

It has nevertheless left Team Sky insiders fearful of a negative reaction among fans at the race when Froome has been the target of abuse in the past.

The last time ASO took such action was in 2009, when it sought to exclude Tom Boonen from the Tour de France after the former world champion's third out-of-competition positive test for cocaine.

The Briton was criticised in June by five-times Tour de France victor Bernard Hinault, who called on riders to go on strike if Froome competes at the race.

He said: 'It's awful that the sporting authorities have not managed to solve this problem before the start of the world's biggest race. "I won't say anything more but of course, rules have to be modified", he said.
