As well as reuniting parents with their children, organisers are calling for an end to immigrant detention - even when families are kept together - and also plan to voice opposition to President Trump's travel ban targeting five majority-Muslim nations, which was upheld by the US Supreme Court earlier this week.

Laura Prado, an immigrant from Uruguay who arrived in Canada in 1986, took the microphone to say she was appalled by the audio of children in a USA detention centre asking to see their parents.

Over 700 rallies were planned to be held in all the 50 states of the USA on Saturday.

"That is why I march today, to honour his sacrifice".

Almost 600 protesters were arrested during a clangorous occupation of a US Senate office building in Washington on Thursday, where they decried US President Donald Trump's "zero- tolerance" stance on illegal immigration. More than 2,700 undocumented children have been separated from their parents since the policy was put into effect.

Dubbed "Families Belong Together", the demonstration in Washington began at Lafayette Square where crowds gathered directly across from the White House before a planned march toward the Capitol.

A 34-year-old protestor in Washington D.C., Jose Flores said that his father entered the USA illegally from Guatemala over three decades ago. "Don't give up. Don't give in".

Other protesters converged on the global bridge that carries traffic between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico.

James would be the 12th, which means Cleveland will only be looking to fill two or three open roster spots as it is. Cleveland has advanced to the last four NBA Finals since James returned and it won the title in 2016.

Protests were also held Saturday in Kansas City and Columbia.

In Trump's hometown of New York City, another massive crowd poured across the Brooklyn Bridge in sweltering 90-degree heat, some carrying their children on their shoulders, chanting, "Shame!"

Elaine Alvarez, 37, said she joined family members at a rally at Foley Square in NY to break stereotypes about immigrants being criminals.

Richard Singh Jr. says it took him 20 years to immigrate to Queens from Guyana. "We'll come when Trump is here, when he's not, when he's vacationing on his golf course, it doesn't matter where he is because we're here to fight". "No matter our demographic or political affiliation, we have good qualities as immigrants and refugees". "We've been putting in our dues in this country for a long time, and this country needs to start paying us some respect".

For Marilyn Mendoza of Queens, Saturday's march is the first step in a movement. "A lot of the organizations who did this event depend on donors to fund lawyers".

In Portland, Sharaf and other mothers who organized the rally hope to attract 5,000 people.

New York City was one of hundreds of cities with protests nationwide this weekend.

Trump has made fighting immigration - both illegal and legal - one of the most sacred mantras of his fiercely US-centered policy agenda. Joshi wants to keep the energy alive.

"We find it unacceptable that detainees are being held here and we see staying here and trying to getting in the way of the process of detention as the only way forward", Kautz said.
