Supreme Court ends term without retirement

  • Justice Anthony Kennedy 81 often has been a swing vote on the Supreme Court

AMY CONEY BARRETT of Indiana, US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit: Barrett is a relatively new appeals court judge in Chicago, confirmed previous year after a bruising confirmation fight.

"If Donald Trump, who has promised to overturn Roe v. Wade, picks someone who is anti-choice, the future of Roe v. Wade is very much in question", said David Cole, national legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union.

If asked to consider it, Lee responded: "I would not say no".

He plans to begin interviewing possible candidates Monday but may meet with some this weekend in New Jersey.

In his first week as President, Trump issued an executive order banning entry for 90 days by citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

We've also had the chance to witness a season of Supreme Court decisions that reflect the impact of Trump's first appointee to the high court, Justice Neil Gorsuch. "I say, we fight", she tweeted.

In brief remarks from the Oval Office during a meeting with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Trump called Kennedy a "great Justice of the Supreme Court", and said he had met with Kennedy for half an hour on Wednesday.

Kennedy's news that he'll leave the court next month immediately activated a network of White House aides, congressional allies and outside advocates, all set for their second Supreme Court confirmation fight in two years. "We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy's successor this fall".

Barring surprises in upcoming months, the only scenario that could make the situation more favorable toward Republicans on abortion rights - and worse for Democrats - would be if another unexpected vacancy on the court opens up during Trump's tenure. The University of MI graduate was originally nominated to his current job by Bush in 2006, but due to opposition from Michigan's two Democratic senators, he was not confirmed until a compromise deal was reached two years later. "Heidi will vote "no" for any pick we make for the Supreme Court", Trump said. Trump has continued to target courts and judges with the crudest of insults, even as his White House works overtime to push forward lower-court judicial nominees who are among the most ideologically extreme and professionally underqualified we have seen in almost 40 years in this field. "He's a man. who has displayed tremendous vision, and tremendous heart, and he will be missed".

Protest Encampment Cleared at ICE Building in Portland
Protesters here said they were aware that the way they respond to raids will be watched by those other camps. Danialle James, 32, was still in her pajamas as she yelled toward the line of officers in riot gear.

Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor Wednesday that the Supreme Court seat should remain vacant until after the elections.

Among other judges on the US President's nominee list are - Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, who serves on the US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, Raymond Kethledge of MI, who serves on the 6th Circuit and newly confirmed federal appeals court judges Amy Coney Barrett of IN and Amul Thapar of Kentucky, as per the report.

Kethledge, a circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, clerked for Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hardiman and Thapar were among the group interviewed by Trump before he selected Neil Gorsuch for a vacancy past year. Leo said he expected that work to start before Trump leaves on July 10 for a trip to Europe, adding that it was "not outside the realm of possibility" that the search process could conclude by then. Red-state Democrats doing their best to keep their distance from Trump without losing constituents will face a decision of enormous outcome.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative political campaign organization, launched a seven-figure ad buy Wednesday, aimed at vulnerable Democrats, said chief counsel and policy director Carrie Severino.

Gorsuch has a sparse record on abortion, but has drawn praise from anti-abortion groups and criticism from abortion rights supporters.

For Republicans' part, they need to balance actively campaigning against the trio in 2018, while courting their votes for the Supreme Court nominee. "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0".

Trump's nominee is likely to give the conservatives a solid majority and will face a Senate process in which Republicans hold the slimmest majority, but Democrats can't delay confirmation.
