  • 3 young progressives look to topple longtime incumbents in New York’s Tuesday primaries

A millennial candidate has shaken up the US Democratic Party having beaten the incumbent congressman for his seat.

When Ocasio-Cortez was in college, her father unexpectedly passed away without a will, touching off a years-long probate battle during which "she witnessed firsthand how attorneys appointed by the court to administer an estate can enrich themselves at the expense of the families struggling to make sense of the bureaucracy", according to an account in The Intercept.

She faces Republican Anthony Pappas in the November midterms.

She launched a campaign against him, a grassroots effort that made history when she won.

"We're having an affordability crisis in New York City", Ocasio-Cortez told NPR's Steve Inskeep on Morning Edition on Wednesday. She is an activist who identifies as a Democratic socialist.

Passing laws that support working families and work to lift Americans out of poverty is "absolutely possible", added Ocasio-Cortez, "but it takes the political courage to do it". Here, a graphic supporting her from the organization's New York City chapter. But many on social media thought too much media attention went to her opponent: a 56-year-old male deeply established in the Democratic party.

"I never really saw myself running on my own", she told NY magazine "I counted out that possibility because I felt that possibility had counted out me".

Critics of the Democratic establishment say this is precisely the strain of dismissiveness that has stoked disenchantment among the party's base.

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run", to Ocasio-Cortez.

Among those caught in the crackdown were 124 defendants in DOJ's South Florida district for false claims totaling more than $337 million.

Up until now, it seemed like Democratic incumbents had been insulated from the anger and energy that has coursed through the political left during the Trump presidency.

A trio of young progressives are attempting to beat three longtime Democratic incumbents in NY on Tuesday, something no challenger has done so far this primary season.

That may have just changed.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell doesn't think it's a good thing for Democrats.

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, a former organizer for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and a onetime staffer for the late Sen.

Despite Crowley outraising Ocasio-Cortez by 10-to-1, her targeted campaign and aggressive ground-game were key.

Ocasio-Cortez wants a single payer health care system that would cover medicine, vision, dental, and mental health care.

Ocasio-Cortez ran on a left-wing platform that included a federal jobs guarantee program and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the border patrol enforcement agency created under President George W. Bush in 2003.

Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thinks her Bronx roots will be working in her favor. One national Democratic strategist told the Guardian that "the Crowley team did not raise red flags or ask allies for help with his primary".
