He appeared to watch attentively during the hearing but never spoke. "It all came from a public record".

Authorities in Maryland on Friday (June 29) said a gunman who fatally shot five people employed at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, had barricaded the exit doors before his planned assault, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Mr Ramos so routinely sent profanity-laced tweets about the paper and its writers that retired publisher Mr Marquardt said he called police in 2013, telling his wife at the time, "this guy could really hurt us".

The shooting was a targeted attack on the newspaper, said William Krampf, acting chief of the Anne Arundel County police.

Phil Davis, a Capital Gazette crime reporter, said he had been hiding under his desk along with other newspaper employees when the shooter stopped firing, the Capital Gazette reported on its website.

The computer engineering graduate was arrested after Rob Hiaasen, 59, Wendi Winters, 65, Rebecca Smith, 34, Gerald Fischman, 61, and John McNamara, 56, were blasted to death with a shotgun.

Since taking office, Trump has repeatedly derisively referred to the media as "fake news" and said journalists are dishonest. Hiassen was an assistant editor and columnist.

Flynn said she often discussed sports with McNamara, who had an "encyclopedic" knowledge of the subject. It only took police 60 seconds to respond to the incident, and within two minutes, Altomare said, they were cornering the suspect.

Some congregation members laughed through tears as they shared stories about her. Dr. L.E. Gomez said Winters was, like him, a NY native and had a sarcastic, opinionated, irreverent manner.

Some 300 local, state and federal officers converged on the scene, Anne Arundel County Chief Timothy Altomare said Friday.

In a press conference in Annapolis, PC Altomare said: "Maryland Police helped serve a warrant and we found evidence at the address to show the planning [of the attack]". I will also confirm that it was a pump-action shotgun.

Marquardt - who Ramos once wished was dead on Twitter - said the alleged gunman was the most threatening person he ever dealt with as a journalist.

Ramos had waged a six-year campaign of harassment against the paper and its journalists after they reported his previous persecution of the woman - who was a former school classmate.

After months of trolling, the woman took Ramos to court where he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour harassment charge.

His suit was thrown out in March 2013 during a hearing in which he told the judge, "Your honor, this has become my life".

He also said there was "one victim who attempted to escape through the backdoor and was shot at that point".

However, the decision was made by the staff not to press criminal charges as they were concerned it would exacerbate the situation.

Smith called herself a "bonus mom" to her fiance's daughter and loved taking her to softball games and having game nights at home, Dedmon said. "It's in a four-story brick and glass office building".

"This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our heats with grief", he said.

Addressing a shooting that occurred at a Maryland newspaper, Trump on Friday said, "Journalists like all Americans should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their jobs".

Five days later, the Capital Gazette wrote a story titled, "Jarrod Wants To Be Your Friend".

Early Friday morning the paper tweeted about the Opinion page, which is entirely blank, besides the small, fine printed words that read: "Today we are speechless".

He also sued former reporter Eric Thomas Hartley who now works for another paper and was not at the shooting.
