  • Dallas Mavericks decline Dirk Nowitzki's team option, plan to re-sign

Marc Stein of The New York Times reports that the Warriors will take a shot at DeAndre Jordan in free agency. While the Mavs seem intent on working out a deal for Jordan, Stein reports that the Clippers have granted Jordan's agent permission to explore other trade scenarios.

The Dallas Mavericks on Friday night declined Dirk Nowitzki's $5 million team option for next season to make him a free agent and maximize their financial flexibility this off-season, according to two people familiar with the decision.

While the Clippers wait for center DeAndre Jordan to decide on his player option for next season, they have given his representative permission to speak with the Dallas Mavericks about a trade, according to several National Basketball Association executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

MAVS BOUND? DeAndre Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers decides to test the free agency. Former teammate Blake Griffin and coach Doc Rivers were part of a contingent that went to his house and stayed with him until the deal was official.

Is it now impossible for LeBron James to join the Miami Heat?
But the Cavaliers assembled a weak supporting cast around James last season and attempted to revamp the team the trade deadline. This, of course, did not happen, and it was not until James came back to Cleveland that the Cavaliers won a title.

Jordan will fill a big need for the Mavericks.

In 2017-18, Jordan averaged 12 points and 15.2 rebounds per game. Smith Jr. and Doncic can be the kick starters for a run and gun offense.

His arrival would be an odd twist for Dallas fans, who booed him steadfastly in each of his five trips to Dallas after that summertime saga. Dallas, one of few teams with significant salary-cap space, hopes to fast-track the rebuilding process and return to the playoffs this season.
